It's probably partly a class thing. Going to an orchestra and getting dressed up to listen to music is pretty associated in a lot of people's minds with being rich, upper class, and therefore superior.

Thankfully the wide abundance of music on the internet is making it accessible for people to listen to in their living rooms dressed in their PJs if they want to. But there's still this weird sense of superiority attached to it, like the smell that lingers after a fart.

Ugh, yes, I definitely view being a classical music snob as having a sense of classism to it, like if you DON'T like classical music you're a lesser person, due to the history of it being associated with hoity-toity orchestra.
