Classical music fans really can be a pain in the ass.

I think, unfortunately, there is some non-trivial percentage of classical music fans who became fans at least in part because it was so snobby and allowed them to be like that. Which really stinks, especially because classical music is pretty cool.

Jazz fans can be like that too, but most of them are decent, open-minded types who are cool to hang out with (they're also fairly rare nowadays) while I've never met a classical music fan who WASN'T a huge snob about it.

Yeah, I think anything that has the kind of cultural cachet that jazz and classical music has is going to have fans like that, unfortunately. I've known people in both camps who've been really cool, and people who've been really awful. And, yeah, the cool ones tend to be very cool, decent people.

It's just so frustrating. Like, the music is so good! Can't it just be about that? Bah.

Jazz fans who bang on about how hip and cool they are, unlike those snotty, classist classic music lovers are two a penny in my experience. So maybe it's just that you are hearing what you want to hear?
