Re: Juggernaut pairings you don't ship?

Gambit/Wolverine. I guess it isn't really as much of a juggernaut pairing compared to some of the others mentioned, but it definitely used to take up a huge percentage of the slash fic in the early X-men fandom (I'm talking over a decade before Charles/Erik fic really took off). I just...didn't really get it. And most of the fic was so, so bad. Gambit was always this gigantic woobie who had usually been horrifically abused and Rogue was often vilified beyond belief because I guess Gambit and Wolverine couldn't bang otherwise or something. Even Scott/Wolverine, which became the next most popular slash pairing after the first movies started coming out unless there's another a pairing that I'm forgetting, was better.

Oh God, I remember that. _(:3 」∠)_ I never got it either. I'm now having flashbacks to gratuitous Cajun...

I also seem to remember there was a significant amount of terrible fic for Gambit/Iceman at the time too, which also made no sense but at least was more tolerably OOC than Gambit/Wolverine.

Ugggh yes, the accent/random cajun words. Rogue/Gambit fic was even worse in that aspect since writers did her accent too; some of them were damn near unintelligible.

Now that you bring it up, I do remember a weird amount of Gambit/Iceman. They did at least have some good scenes together in the comics, but it was still odd. I honestly don't even remember what Gambit/Wolverine shipping was based on anymore aside from the fact that they both pissed each other off at various points.

I will never get the need to phonetically write out accents. All I can remember now is that every fic was "dat" this and "yer" that. And a lot of slut!Gambit, which was never really my thing.

I can't remember either: I remember that a lot of the anti-Rogue sentiment at the time (and woobie!Gambit I guess?) came from the abandoned-in-Antarctica thing, but if there was some canon basis for the Gambit/Wolverine then it remains a mystery to me.

Meanwhile I used to ship Gambit/Courier and there was very little fic for them in the first place.

The thing that's really annoying is that even the comics sometimes phonetically wrote out their accents back in the day. I haven't really seen it lately though. And I just remembered something else that always ticked me off in fic: a lot of writers had Gambit speak in third person. I think this mostly came from the 90s cartoon, because I don't recall him ever doing it in the comics unless it was very rarely. God, it was so dumb. Especially during sex scenes in fic...

I'm definitely all for Gambit/Courier though. They sure had a fair amount of material to go off of. Hell, Gambit even kissed him that one time

na

Oh good lord, I remember when the X-men comments used to write phonetic accents all the fucking time (god dammit Claremont...). They even spelled out Wolverine's Canadian accent. The most hilarious example though had to have been the time when Sam Guthrie was shown writing a letter in a phonetically spelled Kentucky accent, which I still see get made fun of. Dark times, man. I'm glad they rarely do it now
