Fic Advice...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering when's the best time to contact a beta.

I didn't write back to my beta for about a month, [real life situations, etc.] and I now have waited about a month for my beta to return my draft. That said, I'm aware that life happens, and my beta thus far has been nice. But I would like to start posting my fic...When would you say is the appropriate time to contact her?

Again, I realize life happens and I too had her waiting for about a month, so I did not expect to be responded to promptly. What would you propose fs, as betas or as writers?

Is this a fairly new beta, or someone you've been in touch with for a while? If the latter, is there something else you could contact them about (or just to say hi) and then bring up the subject gradually?

Was there any agreement about turnaround times, or just a "whenever you have time" basis? Did they give you an estimate of how long they might take? Are they active elsewhere, and could you casually contact them there (again, only bringing up the fic gradually)?

Honestly, if it's been around the same amount of time as you left them waiting, then it should be okay. It's not as though you left it a month and only giving them a couple of days. And you could just phrase it as checking in to see how things are going, no pressure.

As long as you're polite, contact her whenever you want.

Write her and ask how the betaing is coming along, and if she can give you an estimate on when she'll be finished, as you're looking forward to posting your fic soon. Thank her for her help so far. Done.

For future fic betaing, I suggest working out a timeframe beforehand. Give your beta a wordcount + what kind of betaing you're looking for (only SPaG vs concrit for plot, characterisation, etc) and ask for an estimate on how long it'll take. That gives you an idea of when it's appropriate to email for a status update.

RL absolutely can smack you in the face unexpectedly sometimes, but imo it's not rude to just ask for an update - just stay polite, so that if RL is busy attacking her, at least she doesn't feel attacked by you as well.

(This advice may not be applicable if she seems to just be flaking out on you, but that doesn't seem the case here!)
