As long as you're polite, contact her whenever you want.

Write her and ask how the betaing is coming along, and if she can give you an estimate on when she'll be finished, as you're looking forward to posting your fic soon. Thank her for her help so far. Done.

For future fic betaing, I suggest working out a timeframe beforehand. Give your beta a wordcount + what kind of betaing you're looking for (only SPaG vs concrit for plot, characterisation, etc) and ask for an estimate on how long it'll take. That gives you an idea of when it's appropriate to email for a status update.

RL absolutely can smack you in the face unexpectedly sometimes, but imo it's not rude to just ask for an update - just stay polite, so that if RL is busy attacking her, at least she doesn't feel attacked by you as well.

(This advice may not be applicable if she seems to just be flaking out on you, but that doesn't seem the case here!)
