What I take from this: possession is an awesome trope that should be used more often

It kind of makes sense, in a way. When the villain is possessing someone, they're more mysterious, and when they're revealed the mystery is lost. The power of the imagination to make the unknown horrible is astonishing.

Hell, even Voldemort was scarier before he actually showed up.

Yes. It applies to all the "hidden" characters and plot devices, actually. Coming up with an actually impressive reveal is one of the hardest things a writer must do.

It's true. I'm trying to think of what the best reveal I've encountered is, but I'm kind of drawing a blank atm.

The power of the imagination to make the unknown horrible is astonishing.

On a related note, one of the smartest things Supernatural ever did was making the hellhounds invisible. Not just from a budgetary angle, but because nothing is more terrifying than the monster you can't actually see.

Same with RTD and the monster in Midnight on Doctor Who. One of David Tennant's best performances as the Doctor IMO.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's the second one?

That's Chloe and Brainic from Smallville.

The payoff of the reveal has to be worth the build up. If not, it falls flat. That's what I'm getting.

The possession trope always shows off the acting chops (or lack thereof) of the actor playing the possessed. That's what I really like seeing.

I haven't seen all of these, but of the ones I have, Dylan O'Brien was the best. I might be a tad biased though ;)

Nooooo go away Flocke. It still wigs me out when people post gifs and things with him in it and label it Ben/Locke or Bocke (we sure lucked out with ship names lol), because that's so not him. The whole MiB-Jacob thing was so disappointing in general, I wanted them both to lose, lol. But Titus Welliver's hot, too, so there's that? And Jared Padalecki definitely has his foibles as an actor, but he's always great as possessed Sam, especially with Lucifer. The mannerisms and cadence are just spot on, it's the spookiest thing. Talking about these two shows together always reminds me of Mark Pellegrino saying at an SPN convention that he doesn't see much difference between Jacob and Lucifer, which I loved because Jacob was the worst. /definitely not wanking about Lost

Except Mark Pellegrino was also playing a character who had been possessed by Lucifer.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought about that, but Nick is ultimately the form Lucifer uses most, even in Sam's hallucinations, so I went with him as the "true form". I don't think we've ever seen Lucifer outside of a body. He would just be black smoke, right?

Re: OP

No, he's a fallen angel, when we see him possess Nick, we see the house light up bright like when an angel takes possession. We haven't seen an angel's true form.

LOL. Okay, fair enough.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Though I maybe have a tiny possession kink so like?

I am right there with you, anon. Knowing this now, it makes so much sense that possession is one of the main powers of a villain in something I created many years ago. I just didn't really realize it at the time.

You'll love Penny Dreadful. Eva Green is incredible as a possessed young woman.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Void!Stiles! I got so excited just seeing him in a secret. *melts with happiness*

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell is that thing in the lower left? It looks something like the Smiledog creepypasta meme.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's the Nogitsune from Teen Wolf (big bad of season 3b).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Evil fox spirit (nogitsune) manifested in severely-burned dude's body.

I LOVE possession plots. So much angst. So much betrayal. So much horrible mental trauma and dramatic omg fight!!! speeches. So much potential for fluffy-yet-angsty hurt/comfort afterwards (though shows rarely focus on that part).

Yu gi oh was my favorite show as a kid because of this.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
In lost it's because Locke was a damnn more interesting character more than mib. The actor has charisma. I'm still disappointed they killed Locke just to have mib use his character.
Thinking it more.. Mib was also way moore interesting when he was the smoke monster!
