Ah, ok! If so, I agree with you. (I'm just on a bit of a hair-trigger when it comes to him, because too often people say that /nobody/ could possibly like Levi for reasons other than what you listed).
Actually, based on what's happening in the manga now I wonder if Isayama hadn't intended on a more ensemble cast from the beginning, but was pushed by the editors to market the Trio hard at the beginning as a selling point, and because of Japan and their thing with Childhood Friends. And then Levi happened so they ditched that marketing plan.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. I have nothing against Levi, but I think focusing the plot away from the main trio has been a real weakness of the last few manga chapters because Isayama's strongest writing, in my opinion, has always been with those characters

Just chiming in to say I really agree with you. The last several chapters have been a drag. The manga really shone when he was writing about the younger characters, especially the main trio. I feel like all the heart has gone out of the series, and I don't even bother checking the chapter updates anymore.
I do like the older characters, but they were the best as side characters.

It's really unfortunate because the manga used to be really enjoyable and now it's just dragging.

Hmm. I actually disagree with you - I thought the best arc was the Trost-Female Titan combo, and part of that was because of the interaction of the older and younger characters.
However, I think that one of the best chapters Isayama wrote was the one where Levi fought Kenny. In my opinion, it was the most interesting battle we've seen in the series thus far - excellent and creative use of the space around them. I really loved that, and found it about 10X more entertaining than any of the titan battles we've had.
And it's ironic because in one of the interviews Isayama said that he didn't actually have any idea what he was doing with Eren - which explains why most of the plot involves Eren getting kidnapped...

tbh, I'd summarize and say that Isayama has some good ideas, but his storytelling ability isn't mature enough for the story he's trying to tell, nor for the popularity SNK achieved.

That's fair enough, it probably boils down to personal preference.
Personally, I thought the battle where Levi fought Kenny was weak and a waste of a chapter because Isayama's action sequences are so confusing I can't tell what's going on lol

I definitely concur that Isayama is much stronger when he's not trying to tell 50 stories at once. I think that for most of the plotlines we've seen this is true - if you pare it down, there are good elements at the core, and if you simplified them (or just separated them into different stories!) you'd still have plenty of story left. Hell, SNK was going fine before the current bullshit where basically everybody ever is a titan shifter :|

Imo, the whole Kenny Ackerman sideplot had been weak. I don't even know what Isayama is really trying to bring to the story with his character, except to add another player to the whole Titan conspiracy. And Isayama's art skills is not good enough to make an action chapter like that enjoyable or worth the read.

Kenny Ackerman is such an unnecessary character. I still can't get over the panel where he enters the bar and says "found you!" It was like a parody at that point.
