There's no shame in learning something new because you first learned about it in a piece of media. If anything, it says that you expanded your mind and found something that interested you.

When writers use real history, it can be cool because it adds information beyond their own invention to the readers' knowledge base. (Though watch out for crap like Braveheart.) I like fantasy settings all right, but you're learning non-facts from them that aren't much use outside those imaginary worlds.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 06:14 am (UTC)(link)Taeko Watanabe is incredible. Her attention to detail alone is worth the read (everyone is wearing their hair according to their caste! Everybody's family crest is researched as close as possible!), and while she fictionalizes the main character, she's stuck very close to known facts. Personally my favorite "historical liberty" was her take on the Ikedaya Incident, in which she explained that the legend that everyone already knew made no sense at all, and compensated splendidly.
