Just today I read a fic from someone whose fic header was like this, plus emoticons as well, every second word. The fic was quite good, that's the thing. But the disconnect was so intense it left my head spinning.

It makes me feel really old. I just don't get why people talk like this online. I even tried to do it myself for a while, which was stupid, but I just wanted to fit in a little.

Most of the people who write like this are even older than I am, which is the weird thing, and I'm no spring chicken.

I am really old, and for the most part I slip into these kind of descriptive conventions precisely because it's online.

For me it stemmed from IM and/or IRC conversations, as a visual short-hand/linguistic emoticon in the days no one could see you laughing/sighing/tilting your head/etc. It also seemed to be more prevalent among writers, so it's entirely possible we're using fic-writing/RP conventions in our own 'voice' also.

I guessed it was a hangover from IM conversations, as I once went on chat with one of these older writers who replied to comments like this, and suddenly all those *shrugs* and *eyeroll* and emoticon things made a lot more sense.

It's not a style of typing that carries well into other formats, though. It just looks like the person is trying to seem younger than they are, and failing miserably. I know they can use proper grammar and sentence structure, I just read their fic!

AYRT

It just looks like the person is trying to seem younger than they are.

While I obviously can't speak for everyone who does it, for me it's more about keeping the tone conversational. Like I said above, the kind of syntax I'd use for fic can look rather strained and too serious when it comes to random squeeing.

There's also the age-old issue of tone itself becoming confused when you're communicating in writing, especially in forums like this. I can tolerate a few emoticons or *shrugs* if it means the clarity of the other person's tone and intention is conveyed with less ambiguity.

ayrt as well

It depends how many of them, I suppose. A few *shrugs* now and then among otherwise clear conversation doesn't matter much either way.
