I'm honestly surprised that someone who writes well communicates that way through text.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're trying to appear accessible? Sometimes people who write well intimidate the people they'd like to comment on their stories so they get emoticonic to show that they're approachable.

I'm not. In writing you can describe actions (show not tell). In a response to a comment, you are writing the dialogue, and if you rely on body language a lot of communication...

Echoing the others and adding that I personally used to do this back in middle school and high school. I was allergic to the word "I", tossed in random capitals, had "^_^" as my goto emoticon... the works.

I personally thought I was being cute, and that's what I assume's going through the heads of anyone else who still types like that. Embarrasses the fuck out of you later, but that's life.

Could be that they're awkward and self-conscious in social situations but are able to write fiction more confidently.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Just today I read a fic from someone whose fic header was like this, plus emoticons as well, every second word. The fic was quite good, that's the thing. But the disconnect was so intense it left my head spinning.

It makes me feel really old. I just don't get why people talk like this online. I even tried to do it myself for a while, which was stupid, but I just wanted to fit in a little.

Most of the people who write like this are even older than I am, which is the weird thing, and I'm no spring chicken.

intrigueing: (buffy eww)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-11-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
If you're talking about who I really think you're talking about, I don't think her stories are actually all that great either. A few are great, and they have a LOT of fascinating and well-thought-out meta in them, but most of the stories are so obviously thinly-veiled vessels for the meta, rather than actual stories, even the character-study type of story. It's very hard to picture the characters actually doing or saying the conversations/dialogue in them.

So maybe it's that the author is just too close to her thinky-thoughts to sit back and reflect on how her writing, in stories and comments, looks to the reader?

Aw man, I'm having war flashbacks to when I used to do that. I'd do such elaborate ones like *shakes head with disgust and then throws bucket at you, while dancing away singing We Will Rock You*

My thought is that this person might be young and trying too hard to be funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
icarus does that. I like it. It introduces body language to the text and adds a little something to the conversation.

I don't think that kind of thing is that annoying. I mean, I found it annoying and embarrassing when I was in high school and I'd just gotten over the obligatory middle school phase of using those kind of emotes myself, but I grew out of that too.

It sounds like the author is just really awkward and isn't sure how to respond to comments and therefore falls back on these "actions" to express themselves rather than words.

No matter how forced it may feel, they need to just learn how to say "Thank you for reading!" instead of *omg tilts head and smiles hopefully???*

I wouldn't mind it, tbh. I really miss when people used a ton of emoticons and *actions*, it feels a lot more approachable than straight up formal English.

Emoticons, psuedo-roleplay, and even slang used to bother me during a phase where I thought myself more eloquent than everyone else (no joke I still suck at making words into sentence combos nothing has changed). I don't remember when I finally lightened up and stopped caring so much about it.

Anywho, is the difference between their prose and lack of formality in conversation really that jarring?

I...had no idea people judged authors so harshly based on how they respond to comments. This makes me a little paranoid to respond to comments at all.

What's the big deal?

Not gonna lie, I find that type of cutesy typing extremely annoying as well. I don't mind emoticons :) to appear friendly or the occasional *shrugs*, but the stuff you wrote would make me bash my head against a wall.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
One of my comms has a regular who uses *lol* at least once per comment, often several times. Maybe it's meant as punctuation? Anyway, I find it so aggravating, I scroll past her posts without reading them. And I like her otherwise; she's a really nice person, and I know I'm being rough on her. But the tic, its frequency, its sheer meaninglessness of the tic drives me up the wall.

The OP's author? That would make my brain explode :-(

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds pretty annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Are they older? I feel like that more cutesy, *action here* type of internet conversation used to be a lot more prevalent back in the day.

I don't blame you for feeling irritated. I tend to avoid RPers who use first person POV in action tags (think *I look at you, puzzled* as an example) because it creeps me out, as though their character is looking at me, Mimi, and not Kizár (my dominant RP character).

If you have to cut your interaction with them to an absolute minimum to cope, then keep leaving your non-interactive comments.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So you have to leave, because the author's having fun wrong.

I can see why this is a secret.
