It sounds like the author is just really awkward and isn't sure how to respond to comments and therefore falls back on these "actions" to express themselves rather than words.

No matter how forced it may feel, they need to just learn how to say "Thank you for reading!" instead of *omg tilts head and smiles hopefully???*

This was exactly what I thought at first too.

But a couple commenters mentioned it might be icarus/icarus_chained, who IIRC has no problem responding to comments with multi-paragraph-long explanations of her own fic....OP, want to help us out here?

DA

Okay I had no idea who this person was (or even whether they're who OP's referring to), but having looked at their replies to comments I can see why everyone's irritated by it.

It's not just the prevalence of it, it's that it's all totally irrelevant.

WTF is *grins crookedly* anyway? I'm having flashbacks to all the Natalie Dormer secrets...

Even if it is the same person, that mightn't rule out them being awkward. It could be the difference between a public speaking presentation and a conversation? Having the performance skills to give a speech and answer questions on it isn't necessarily the same as having the social skills to carry a conversation without defaulting onto awkward habits. I could imagine a similar circumstance with being able to present a story and answer technical questions about it, but still not know what social/text conventions are appropriate in comments.
