I think Mary is a vile character and I stopped watching once I realised that we were supposed to be sympathetic towards her. I kind of was in Season 1 with the whole Pamuk mess and she and Edith were equally horrible to each other, but after that she just got nastier and more repressive while everyone else grew and changed.

I still enjoy the show, but I have very little sympathy for Mary; but she strikes me as a really unusual character-- she's SO unable to empathize with people, and she's so distant in her relationships, that I wonder if she has a personality disorder. Which would be kind of cool, because that's not what the show is about. It's nice to have a show where the main character has deep and possibly pathological personality flaws, wherein it didn't make them evil or a super-genius.
