So losing the love of her life within an hour of giving birth to their son wasn't awful enough for you?

Dunno 'bout anyone else, but I was more sorry for him than for her.

Could people PUH-LEEZE not use white text on a light-colored background?! I could read this, but barely, in some places!

I never really saw Mary as a Mary Sue. A lot of people (on the show) like her, sure, but she is horrid a lot. I always think of Mary Sues as, well, perfect. Loving, kind, good at everything, beautiful, etc. Not beautiful people who are mean and have everyone love them anyway. Mary has faults. Mary Sues have no faults.

Preach. Mary sucks. Team Edith all the way.

I'm pretty sure you hate most women from your comments on this site.

I ADORE Edith!!!! Team Ginger/Middle Sister all the way! Every season I am rooting for her to come into her own as a bona fide, sexified, fashionable flapper. And she's even a writer! Love her!

I thought that was the point of Mary. She's a beautiful woman who was given everything in life, so she's a bitch.

Edith is my favourite living character on the show but I can't really get behind this "poor Edith" vibe here, at least not when it comes to Mary. Edith gave as good as she got in that respect.

Now the rest of the family in season one, that's a whole different story.

TBH my only real opinion on this is that Mary is v beautiful

(Note: I have never actually watched Downton Abbey, except for that one episode where her and the blonde guy get engaged or something and she's wearing a really nice dress with these extremely nice gloves and they go out in the snow and stuff)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome to hate her as much as you please, but she's really NOT a Mary Sue. Fellowes is too conscious of her flaws, which she gets called out on regularly - most recently by her grandmother who tells her: "a lack of compassion is as vulgar as an excess of tears."

There is a HUGE difference between a female character written as a cold haughty snob that all the other characters worship anyway, and a female character written as a cold haughty snob that most characters RECOGNISE as being a cold haughty snob.

I agree that male suitors treat her with far more fascination than she deserves, but honestly, I'm so sick of the "Mary Sue" label.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
exactly-- she's kind of a bitch, and everyone knows she's a bitch, and they call her out on it.

I mean... she is wealthy, noble, and exceedingly beautiful. She may get more fascination than she deserves ethically (if you want to make any ethical claims about people deserving romance) but it's not exactly unrealistic for her to have male suitors fascinated with her.

I think Mary is a vile character and I stopped watching once I realised that we were supposed to be sympathetic towards her. I kind of was in Season 1 with the whole Pamuk mess and she and Edith were equally horrible to each other, but after that she just got nastier and more repressive while everyone else grew and changed.

I watched this show with a sister and our parents last summer! Mom got super invested in Mary's story because she wanted the love interest Crawley cousin to be happy, thereby making Mary's happiness a key part in achieving that. Sister and I would basically make fun of Mary all the time though, and we had a running joke of voicing her thoughts whenever she popped up (more often than not, "HOW DOES THIS INVOLVE ME?"), and the agreement that Edith suffering is the one constant of the show (when Edith stops suffering, that's when you'll know the show is almost over).

Dad spent most of the show getting angry when English Bill Murray's valet guy was having too much screen time and mary suing up on his own (paraphrase).

What anonymous said a few comments up. She's not a Mary Sue at all. I personally think she does a lot of what she does because she has iron-clad walls and boundaries that she has a lot of trouble getting past.

And Edith, as sister and 'second' in line, is an easy target. But Edith is no wilting flower.

HOWEVER - I was more than ready for something good to happen to Edith. She really deserves some *happiness*!!

*luffs them all*

I can't stand Mary either, but I will never hate a character on that show more than Bates.

It might be that I only watched the latest season but I agree with you. Without going into spoilers Mary gets away with way to much and it all gets wrapped up with a neat little bow while being rude to Edith who was a hell lot nicer when she was in mourning.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hard no on that one. I think you're far off on calling Mary perfect. The show doesn't portray her as perfect (fans on the other hand...), the show portrays her as flawed - she's snobby and she's cold but not unfeeling and not unlovable. I love her personally but the show really doesn't write off her flaws.

Also, who gives a shit about Edith? She's gotten better over the seasons but she's such a petty, self-centered jerkass.

If anything, I always thought Sybil was the Mary Sue?
