I watched this show with a sister and our parents last summer! Mom got super invested in Mary's story because she wanted the love interest Crawley cousin to be happy, thereby making Mary's happiness a key part in achieving that. Sister and I would basically make fun of Mary all the time though, and we had a running joke of voicing her thoughts whenever she popped up (more often than not, "HOW DOES THIS INVOLVE ME?"), and the agreement that Edith suffering is the one constant of the show (when Edith stops suffering, that's when you'll know the show is almost over).

Dad spent most of the show getting angry when English Bill Murray's valet guy was having too much screen time and mary suing up on his own (paraphrase).
