Number 36

I get it.

I don't think it really makes much of a difference if you're a non-Asian foreigner, really ^^;; But here's what I think: Most Japanese have a pre-conceived idea of what Americans look like. And this pre-conceived idea is almost always a blond-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian. Thus, when they see someone like that, they make that association. On the other hand, I don't think Japanese have pre-conceived notions in other cases. So... they don't have any association to make. And I think they're even more uncomfortable than otherwise. ...Trying to make this sound as PC as possible and I'm failing x_x

In any case, though, I really think you're in the same boat as any foreigner there for the most part. Don't worry about it. Japan doesn't love anyone not born there (or who can otherwise make it look like they were). It's not just you.

It's so strange to see these secrets (well, there was one the other day too) about how unfriendly Japan is towards foreigners when me and my friends have always got along splendidly in Japan. I have several acquaintances who work/have worked there, and others who regularly visits. There are always a few annoyances, but overall the Japanese I've met are the nicest people imaginable (the bureaucracy is hell, though).

Of course, it helps that we're not American. The soldiers at the military bases (and the fact that there still are military bases in Japan) really have given you all a bad name, I'm sorry to say.

I didn't mean that every Japanese person was like that. I was just generalizing. Nor was I saying that I met a lot of unfriendliness in Japan. Sure, people stared, but other than that people weren't that bad.

As for the secret the other day, that was far different than today's. At least this person is being reasonable. That other idiot was just ranting.

The Japanese don't dislike Americans, as far as I can tell. In fact, Japan seems to be one of the few countries in the world that still holds a positive view of the U.S. Despite the U.S. pushing Japan around politically.

And don't assume I'm American either. I was in Japan as a Canadian citizen, lol.

I was only talking generally (which is why I really should have made a separate response, but I'd already started writing, and was too lazy to change), and only wanted to talk about how Americans were viewed generally (as far as I could tell anyway).

I really wasn't trying to call you an American, sorry!

Well, it's been three years since I last went (though I'm going agan in a couple of days), so I'm not sure how things are now... and it all depends on the circles you move in. IIRC the scandal with those American soldiers raping a Japanese woman was pretty recent when I was there. One girl I met there (who was from Philadelphia) told me being American was bad enough that she pretended that she was Canadian.

I wasn't complaining about the OP. I was just honestly surprised that my own experiences, as well those of the people I know have been so different. Especially since I don't assume everybody on the internet is American! XD
