How much does anyone want to bet that nobody has ever said anything to OP about the ethnicity of the characters they write about?

You've never heard of tumblr, I take it?

The way OP worded the secret makes me think somebody told them specifically not to write about white characters. I'm just not buying it.

I wouldn't buy that either, but I don't get that reading at all from the secret. OP specifically cites protagonists, and by definition no novel is made up of all protagonists.

That's what I was thinking. Unless you bring it up yourself, who's going to notice? TONS of my favorite fanfic authors basically only write about white people by default since white people are the vast majority of the main characters in media.

Or maybe that it was just a one-off nutty tumblerite and they're taking that one comment very personally?

I have honestly never, ever had a comment about which characters I choose to write fanfic about.

I haven't either.

If you're writing fanfic then the characters' races are already chosen (unless the author left it vague or didn't mention it at all). And if not...who goes through someone's fics and tallies up the white and non-white characters they write about? Honestly, who has the time for that? Has anyone here ever heard of that happening?

Either OP is making this up or they have a persecution complex.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah me either, and I hang out on Tumblr for fandom stuff almost exclusively.

Maybe OP is taking criticisms meant for the writing industry as a whole personally? People do make posts saying they wish there were more fics and books about nonwhite characters, but I've literally never seen someone get shit just for writing a white character.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
maybe not directly, but I've seen posts on tumblr that basically make that claim: if all your characters are white, you're racist. If they're all male, your misogynist. If they're that way in canon, change their race and/or gender!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

Lmao, yep.
