Crunchyroll's paid membership has actually doubled (200k to 400k) in the past year and half, but I agree on the manga market.

Yeah, I don't know anyone who pirates anime anymore because there are so many legal ways to watch it now.

Tell that to the 60,000 guys who downloaded the latest SAO episode according to one of the most popular trackers.

da

Seems to me that's a distribution method problem - as in people want the option to download an episode instead of just streaming it.

Go into MAL or ANN's forums and you can see tons of fans shitting on streaming, because streaming < downloading is the general conscious. A lot of it is because CrunchyRoll is seriously limited outside the US, but most people just find streaming inferior and of course like to keep the pirated files.

Yes, this. Crunchyroll seriously limits the amount of their anime that they offer to non-US viewers.

I still don't pirate it, though. I just don't watch those series, if I cant Crunchyroll them or hire them on physical DVD. It helps that I don't have a dozen little friends all pirating around me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have the impression that most people who pirate anime are relatively young (under 25) and unduly influenced by peer pressure.

You're wrong. It's pretty much the opposite, young people buy a lot, older folks tend to stop buying so much and start pirating instead.

When I was a teen I bought so much manga (most of it was crap that is collecting dust on the shelves because I'll never read them again). Nowadays I only buy things I truly love.
