I think "skinny shaming" is a stupid term, but the lyric does bother me - even though I've never been thin for a single day in my life.

Here's the thing: it bothers me tremendously if women (or really people in general) need to shit on other people to feel good about themselves.

Seriously, there's enough body positivity to go around for all of us, and I loathe the false us-against-them mentality it creates.

Yes.
How about, all body types are cool, as long as it's healthy!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
How about you can be cool and love your body no matter what, without the "healthy" qualifier?

Sure, people severely overweight or underweight might not have physically healthy bodies and health is important. But that shouldn't mean they aren't allowed to love their bodies and it's not our job to shame them either way.

Yeah, I mean, obviously this should be discussed between the person and their doctor if it really is unhealthy.

But no anorexic was cured by someone who told her to go eat a sandwich, just like no obese woman lost weight because a random stranger mocked her for eating a burger on the street.

Often an unhealthy relationship with food is tied to psychology, and accepting yourself goes a long way towards psychological well-being.

Yes, and disability and/or medication can drastically affect body weight, too. Despite looking "healthy" by the current weight standards, I'm really, really not.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really hate the notion that you have to be healthy in order to deserve the privilege of not hating yourself or not being treated like garbage by society.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Silly you, no one wants to say that because they want to feel like their body type is *special* and anyone who disagrees (aka anyone who isn't like them) deserves to be shamed.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
This. All of this.

Plus, I hate the idea that female body shape matters because Boys Like It. Women were not put on this earth just to be attractive to males.

Yeah, that's the other thing that bugs me about that song. I mean, I guess it's cool that "boys like a little more booty to hold at night", but it's not the reason why you should love your body.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
but the line that follows after

'nah I'm just joking I know you think you're fat'

like.. it isn't skinny shaming at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
"it's just a joke, don't be so sensitive!!"

no but it really really is.
