I always felt what happened with Gaara is what should have happened with Sasuke. The Sasuke stuff was dragged out way too long whereas the Gaara stuff was more condensed.

Because of that we got to see more of Gaara being a better friend to Naruto than Sasuke ever was. Sasuke is probably okay with Naruto now, but that doesn't change that the majority of what we saw was Sasuke treating everyone like shit. We never knew he 'secretly' cared about him all along until the end.

It really wasn't obvious. Even Kishimoto said he portrayed them wrong and they came off as lunatics.
