I've been trying to leave more comments on fics recently, and this secret almost feels like it could be about me. There's one writer who definitely seems to write mainly to please me and I'm the main commenter on her stories. It can feel a little overwhelming sometimes. A secret like this inspires me to go on. It can't hurt, being nice, can it? I only say true things. I try to find something positive to say each time and occasionally offer constructive advice.

I comment on lots of stories. I should comment on even more because I read a lot of fanfic. The problem is that I often read stories that have been posted over 5 years ago, and I feel awkward commenting on those.

As someone who has fic that was posted many years ago, I still get pleased whenever people leave a comment on it!

Today I left a comment on a fanfic from 2005. I read everyone's comments here and decided to just go for it.

The reason I was so reluctant for so long was that the first time I left a comment on a fic older than a few weeks old, the fic writer replied to say they didn't reply to comments on their older fics, and implied that I should go leave comments on their new fics instead. That made me feel awkward because I didn't like any of their new fics, plus I was worried I had broken some kind of fandom etiquette. That the author was such a good writer and their fics intimidated me made it only worse.

I'm the main commenter on someone's stories, too. They are so good that I wish more people read them.

You should rec them! There are reccing comms, some of them multifandom, and multifandom comms specified for gen, slash, het, etc.

I don't know about other writers, but I'm even *more* touched when someone comments on an older story.

IA, I am really, really, really horrible, lazy, and neglectful about fic reviewing, but I do try to make a big point to comment on a story I love if it's an old story (in one case, a 29 year old story).

This is because the few occasions when I have gotten reviews on years-old fic of mine were some of the happiest fandom-related things that ever happened to me. I never understood people's reluctance to review old fic. Do they think the authors would be annoyed or something?? I'm sure 99.99% of them would be delighted!

Not to push you into anything, but my 2 cents is COMMENT ANYWAY. No matter how long it's been since they posted it, 99.99% of authors would be delighted to get a review for a fic they posted ages ago, even if they've left the fandom.

Comments on an old fic shows that the fic wasn't just some flash in the pan that some people liked for a minute because it was a new shiny fandom thing. It shows that the fic was an actual good story that works and holds up as a story no matter when it's read. ALWAYS comment on old fic if you feel the desire to leave a comment!
