Not to push you into anything, but my 2 cents is COMMENT ANYWAY. No matter how long it's been since they posted it, 99.99% of authors would be delighted to get a review for a fic they posted ages ago, even if they've left the fandom.

Comments on an old fic shows that the fic wasn't just some flash in the pan that some people liked for a minute because it was a new shiny fandom thing. It shows that the fic was an actual good story that works and holds up as a story no matter when it's read. ALWAYS comment on old fic if you feel the desire to leave a comment!
