I know why I pick male characters: So I can throw them at another male character in a romance, when the option is available. Then in my second playthrough it's lesbians all the way. When the first isn't an option, or I don't like the romances available, I go female from the start.

How pretty I can make a dude in the character creator has some influence, too; I want to enjoy looking at him for a whole game because something something shallow. Mass Effect's CC is an utter pill for creating guys who aren't square-headed grunts, but Dragon Age is delightful.
