You can't think of a logical reason why you will always choose a male character over a female one when you can make that choice, but you're ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN it's not internalized misogyny!

I always go for the more default option.

In most games, due to setting, time period, genre, et cetera, being the male character is the more default option of the two.

In a setting where being a woman is the more default option, I'd choose to be the female character.

Eh, I change it up based on what difficulty I go for.
Although in Saints Row I usually create a "Husbando/Waifu" with one gender and a hideous freak with the other.

I usually choose men in games with giant weapons. I like playing women, but I also LOVE playing massive damage dealers. My 5'4 woman, no matter how badass, looks a bit silly toting a claymore or a rocket launcher. So there it's purely aesthetic practicality.

(When I'm going for speed I'll choose a woman. My female rogues and assassins have covered various fantasy and science-fiction worlds with rivers of blood. )

I think it's valid to want to experience the (virtual) world as a man. Like, I never play human if other races are available because I am already human and I want to be/do/say things in games that I wouldn't be able to be/do/say in real life--safely and with no real consequences. Isn't that the beauty of it?

I sometimes write and play male characters because I like to put distance between me and the fictional character. Specially when writing, I hate self-insertion. (which is not the same as identification. I wish people were clearer on that). I started playing female characters when I got into western fantasy games, because female leads in that genre are rare and I thought it'd be interesting. Maybe you choose males for a similar reason?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
My lack of interest in playing female characters in games where I have the option comes from the skimpy as hell armor designs female characters get. Like, give me the option to see men running around with their junk supported entirely by lace made out of delicate little chains as well as the women and I'd be all over that, but if it's just the women it's depressing for me.

elaminator: (Mass Effect: Shep)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-11-29 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy playing as both. In games that have LI's (so, basically BioWare games) I'll usually play as a woman first IF the love interest I'm planning to romance is straight. If the LI I'm planning to romance is bi, I'll opt for a same sex romance so I can have my slice of gay. Example: I romanced Liara in Mass Effect, but only as a woman. In Inquisition, I plan to eventually romance Josephine, but I would never do it as a man. *shrugs* Maybe that's weird.

I will admit on my end that in games where there are no romance options, I'll generally play as who I think looks coolest. That's usually a pretty woman because in most character creators I have an easier time making an attractive woman than an attractive man. (Plus, I just like playing as my own gender, since lots of games don't give you that option.) Even if eye-candy were your reason, I don't see why that's a bad thing; you can spend a lot of times on these games, you might as well be playing as a character you enjoy looking at.

As for Dragon Age 2, I only ever played male characters because I couldn't make a cute f!Hawke for anything. Also, once I decided she didn't have to be cute, I heard her voice...and hated it. So...yea, never finished the game with a female character that time, but thankfully the lady voice actors in Inquistion are just as good (or possibly even better) as the male ones, so that shouldn't be a problem.

You like what you like, I suppose? Maybe you just want something ~different~ (than your experience). This is why, given the option of playing as other fictional races, I usually pick them.

I am a man and I think I favor female characters and personas. At some point I had to accept that it's just a preference, OK?

I do split it.

I have played male characters in RPG's. When I played D&D I probably played male characters more often than female characters. But sometimes in video games I'd rather play the woman because I don't click as much with the male figure.

And a lot of my favorite leads in stories are women.

OP, you play your way and don't worry about it. I'm a woman and my first and canon character in DA games is always a guy. I do play women as well, but it's a role playing game. You can play whatever character you want - you don't have to play yourself.

Personally, I really like playing a guy who's just like me, except a guy. And women who aren't like me at all.

Also, enjoying male characters I get to make is completely different than the billionth generic male protagonist.

We've all got out preferences, like I primarily play women in video games but I'll also always make sure they're not human if I can simply because I like to make characters as different from myself as possible(also I find humans kind of boring so I'd rather be an elf/something else).

Sometimes preferences have no deeper reasoning to them than 'I like this thing' and that's okay.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Female here, and if my only female options are girls dressed in booty shorts then I'll happily pick the male option rather than having to spend the rest of the game looking at the behind of a girl wearing clothes I would never even think of wearing.

If the female option is a woman dressed in proper clothes that are equal to the male counterpart, then I'll happily pick the female option.

I'm looking at you, pokémon.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I know why I often choose a male character although I'm female.

It's because games are all about escapism for me. Playing as a man enforces that feeling of fantasy. Nothing more complicated than that.

You just have a preference and that's okay. Don't fret too much about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I always do this as well, mostly because I never actually see my character as I always have the first person POV (if it's available, if not I just go with the default setting as I never really bother with character customisation). Character customisation doesn't interest me, I just want to play the game.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Don't even worry about it. They're games. Play however you want.
