Re: Media that you count as feminist

Haven't quite finished season 2 yet, but the series Vikings has impressed me. Strong female presence (loads of female characters from all walks), Lagertha in general - and the fact that having a badass like Lagertha didn't give the show permission to not have any other female characters. The women do face obstacles because of their gender and the show doesn't generally pretend otherwise, but they still are strong, even the ones that don't wield swords. Well, I should say, not all of them are strong, but that just shows the variety of women portrayed, as though they are actually just human beings. And the fact that the male characters can show respect for the female characters - well, Lagertha anyway - says a lot, too. These women are mothers, fighters, political schemers, whatever... and the show hasn't yet been gratuitously perverted in its camera shots and there's been no full on nudity. Or, I should say, even when the camera is seductive to the female characters, it is I dare say equally if not way more seductive to its often shirtless (or naked) male characters.

I don't even think the show is astonishingly good (the script is weak, the plots are meh, the protagonist isn't even pretending to be remotely likable at this point, and it is not particularly historically accurate though there seems to be some effort made to delve a little deeper than most stereotypes of Viking culture). But it's enjoyable and I've been really impressed with how it handles the female characters.

Yeah Vikings for sure. They didn't even go where I thought they were going to go with the Lagertha/princess relationship, which would have been bog standard for media trying to be dramatic.

Well, I think they're at least sort of trying to follow the saga, so...there's that.
