Why do people HATE George Lucas?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I love George Lucas. He's made some of my favorite movies, has signed the giving pledge, believes in education and promotes it, has supported African-American actors, and seems like a kind man and wonderful father. It pains me when I read the vitriol spewed his way.

Because he pissed on their cherished childhood memories.

That just…seems like a huge overreaction though. I mean, they're his movies and most of the changes are rather minor to be honest. I can understand criticism but there seems to be a lot of people who really love to denigrate and wish ill on the man.

Because it's trendy.

He tends to do stupid shit to his own franchises when he doesn't have an editor, but HATE? I have trouble hating the guy.

Because the prequels sucked and there's nothing nerds love more than overreacting to things.

I wouldn't say that I hate him, and anyone who has feelings that could be described as actual hate, rather than just saying 'hate' when you mean 'dislike the work of' or 'am annoyed by', is probably crazy

that said, I suspect people dislike him because a lot of his movies after about 1990 are bad, and the way that he's gone about making those movies and overseeing the release of his older work seems frankly baffling to many people. I don't hate him but I don't particularly care for him as a movie maker after SW 1-3 and Indy 4, either.

I don't hate the guy, but I'm not emotionally invested in the Star Wars franchise at all. He does have his flaws, though...

1) He's not a very good writer and appears not to realize this.
2) As a director, he also doesn't seem to be very good at working with people to get the best performances from them. This is a pretty huge problem as a director, tbh. It doesn't matter quite so much when you have veteran actors like Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Ewan MacGregor, etc. but it reeeeeeeally shows when you have newbies like both the child and adult actors who played Anakin.
3) He's super rich and super famous despite 1 and 2, which strikes a lot of people as rather unfair.

Didn't he sign that petition to support Roman Polanski?

I don't know if that's the reason, but it could be a reason.

Re: Why do people HATE George Lucas?

No. I checked. Harrison Ford and Natalie Portman did though.

Ford actually accepted Polanski's Oscar for him and hand delivered it. You can find pictures of them shaking hands.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

i mean i kind of already thought Harrison Ford was a grumpy old asshole.

but how am i going to enjoy Bladerunner and Indiana Jones and Star Wars now, knowing what a piece of shit he is? supporting a known child-abuser is just wayyy beyond the realm of just "being a grumpy asshole".

god dammit.

you can like the things problematic people have done while also understanding that they did problematic things

i know that in theory

but it's really hard to separate IRL

i'll be sitting there watching Indiana Jones and having fun and then the memory that Harrison Ford though Roman Polanski was a top guy will sneak up on me

na

then the memory that Harrison Ford though Roman Polanski was a top guy will sneak up on me

I lost respect for so many people in hollywood when I found out they were Polanski defenders. Thank God there were also a number of actors like Jamie Foxx who were like "fuck that guy, what is wrong with you people??"

For my reasons:

1. He's really not that good of a director. He didn't direct 4/5/6, other people did. The prequels,, which he did direct, just weren't up to the standard those set. The weren't omg-worst-thing-ever-more-than-stalin bad, but they weren't good either. (Mind you, I do see the flaws in the original trilogy, too! But the prequels do seem measurably worse in execution.)

2. He's changed some things (Han shot first, etc) that just don't make sense. I mean, why re-edit a movie? Once it's out, it's out, and you can't just change something once you've given it to the world, certainly not decades later. Imagine if, all of a sudden, a new edition of LotR were released, and Sam just randomly hates Galadriel, because that was Christopher Tolkien's 'true vision'. It's just... why bother making that change?

That said, I don't hate George Lucas. He seems like a fairly nice person. It's more like I'm disappointed in his abilities. But, well, you know fandom. You can't just 'dislike' something, you have to loathe it with every fiber of your being, or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
1. He actually did direct Episode IV

2. It's funny you bring up Lord of the Rings because Tolkien actually did re-write sections of The Hobbit to make it fit with LOTR better. I don't think they're printing originals anymore but you can read the original text in the Annotated Hobbit, I think.

But I agree with you that fandom makes hatred worse.

1. I completely did not know that. Bang goes that argument, then.

2. That's the thing: Tolkien changed things for more reasons than just "I wanted to", kinda. It was more of a retrofitting, I guess. It just seems to me that a large number of changes Lucas did had no real justification besides changing his mind. (I'll admit, this could very well be me playing favorites. I make no excuses on the feeling that Tolkien did no wrong as a writer, even though I know he did sometimes. )

I'd forgotten about his changes. That was annoying because it just seems so pointless. It's a classic, don't fuck around with it unless you have a damn good reason or you'll enrage the fanbase. Why do that?

My main problem with Lucas is that he's got good ideas (albeit heavily borrowed from Akira Kurosawa) but he's not that great at the other roles he chooses to take on. No great shakes as a director, kind of a mediocre writer, etc. Dealing with people like him who are less than competent and unaware of their incompetence is annoying.

Re: Why do people HATE George Lucas?

I've met a lot of men in a particuar age range who saw Star Wars when it first came out during what must have been a sweet spot of childhood/teenagerdom and it CHANGED THEIR LIVES, MAN, and totally inspired them to work in video stores work in movies, or at least be that one guy in your group of friends who is really, really into movies and won't shut up and let anyone else talk about movies.

(Women and guys who were born, say, before 1960 and after 1974 love Star Wars but don't get quite so crazy-pants entitled and borderline offended at the idea that other people love it from a different petspective than they do. This is harsh, but I'm getting really tired of being told my appreciation of Star Wars counts for less because I wasn't born yet or that my parents' or grandfather's appreciation counts for less because they were grown-ass adults in 1977 and it didn't OMG CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR LIVES!)

Lot's of people have legitimate complaints about the prequels or the retroactive changes to the original trilogy, but this is the source of the real vitriol. Throw in some bandwagoning and you have a bunch of hate.

I think Lucas is a great ideas person but not such a great screenwriter or (as someone above said) a director who is good at directing actual actors. I think he got lucky with the first Star Wars and we got lucky that he turned over the screenwriting and directoral reigns to others for Empire and Jedi. He should have continued like that, coming up with stories and cool ideas and then serving as a producer and creative consultant, guiding the crafting of the fictional world while others make sure the dialogue isn't awful and the actors are giving it their all. He's retired now, so it's all moot, but that's my two cents.

There is a documentary called "The People vs. George Lucas" that explains a lot of the animosity.

I personally hold a grudge against him for promising little 11 yr old me that all 9 Star Wars movies would be done in 20 years then not even starting the second trilogy until after the time was up. (Can you tell I have zero affinity for Elsa's philosophy?)
