Can someone lay out for me why shipping is treated as serious business like this? You'd think people would be arguing/dividing up/harassing each other over something that actually mattered, like sports teams.

My theory, based on how I felt as a young virginal teen and on what I've seen over the years, is that people who get that worked up are living vicariously through their ships. The feeling they get when they think of their ship either crashing and burning or being threatened by another ship is the same feeling that people get when they think of being cheated on or left by a significant other.

I don't get it either, but I disagree that sports teams "actually matter". It's the same amount of silly for arguing/harassing/getting serious business over.

Well, back when I was that serious about shipping, i was a kid. And the things I looked for in ships were the things I saw in the relationships of people i knew and the things I wanted in relationships. So I took it seriously because I felt like certain ships were the kinds that worked in real life and others were unhealthy or wouldn't work. I had to grow up before I understood first that different relationships are different in real life and that second fiction isn't reality. And also that people insulting my ship wasn't the same as insulting me.

Because people can't stand thinking/knowing they've backed the wrong horse. Especially when they've done it very publically and loudly.

Which is vaguely sports-analogous but not so much re: the feeling and more re: the outcome.

Basically, it's because a lot of people are so insecure that they can't simply declare "I like this thing."

No, the thing that they like needs to be validated by many other people, alternative things that other people like need to be invalidated, disproven, and shown to be utterly worthless, the people who interpret things differently need to be Wrong instead of just different, and there is no such thing as being open to explore multiple possibilities because that takes too much acceptance and open-mindedness and intellectual curiosity.

IMO acting like this is totally okay when you're a teenager, but after that it gets pretty sad.

And honestly, this is not just for endgame-canon shippers. There are also some people (a vocal minority, I think...or hope) who ship never-gonna-be-canon ships, or slash and femslash ships, who are somehow even worse, because they also add in a smug "I can see things you silly babies are just too stupid to see" layer on top, which always reminds me of that false consciousness stuff in some old second-wave radical feminist tracts (that if a woman disagrees with any of their philosophies, it's because she's brainwashed by the patriarchy).

Can someone explain why so many people make fun of/hate Phil Collins? I don't think he's a great musician or anything, but I don't think he's especially bad and I'm a bit confused because there are far worse musicians than him who don't get half the crap he gets. I don't know much about his personal life, so is that part of it? Is he particularly douchey or something which makes people want to mock his music?

I don't get it. It seems so contrary to everything I think slash is supposed to be: creative interpretations not restricted by what explicitly happens in the source material.

It seems just as restrictive as "slash is incompatible with their relationship!"

Why this "obviously gay"? What is wrong with "plausibly gay! *squee*, but these characters are so fun there are lots of other possibilities too"?

Is there a way that when you go to the site (on desktop or mobile iOS) that the tweets start from when you last viewed the page rather than at the latest tweet? I may not check my feed until 6 hours later. That's a lot of scrolling!

On the desktop I've played with the Who to Follow suggestion box. I can "x" out the ones I don't want to see or have suggested. But if I click on "View All" I don't have the "x" out as a possibility anymore. Is there a way to fix that?

I've heard of different apps used to view your feed. Are they just for mobile or is there ones available for desktop? What apps should I use besides the default app?
