[personal profile] caerbannog 2014-12-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I read the above threads so I've got what it stands for, but im wondering what country is the term from, when did it start getting used, how popular etc etc?

Context basically.

It started out in the UK, but spread to a few other countries.

It's fairly common used in anime/manga stuff, so most of us probably know it from that.

Ah, like fan translations or something?

I get uncomfortable when I'm blindsided by an unknown acronym :( makes me feel old.

I'm pretty sure Japan picked it up because I heard them say it in Japanese...in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, I think?

Haha, I live in the UK but Japanese media is the only place I've actually seen it used.

NEETs, together with "Freeters" (young people who don't have one main job but instead frequently switch between different part-time jobs) were two things that were very prevalent in Japan after the bursting of the so called "Bubble Economy" in the 90s. A lot of young people either didn't find any proper jobs or simply decided not to work/only work part-time jobs out of a lack of perspective. The fact that these two ways of life were so wide-spread is the reason it appears in so many anime. I'm pretty sure the term NEET originated somewhere else, but it was definitely popularised on the internet through Japanese popculture.
