Bechdel test is still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
For "bare minimum"-ness, it's not unreasonable. Beyond that, eh.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's still a thing among reasonable people who understand that it's not the be-all end-all test of feminism, and are familiar with the many flaws that emerge when you try to treat it as such, but still as a useful idea about analyzing media

(and also among some people who think it is the be-all end-all, probably, but that's life)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have been frustrated with F!S's comment crowd lately for rejecting really basic feminist theories and ideas because some bullies have misused them. Your comment is really nice to see today.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
IA. It's really disappointing to see people dismissing sound reasoning because someone in fandom misinterpreted it. It's true that some theories get stretched for bad reasons, but don't throw the baby with the bath water!

To me it's more like I think the test itself is inherently flawed.

As someone else said the other day: a film where two female cops talk about catching male criminal would not pass the test, while a film where two women talk to each other about washing powder would.

And this is basically why I think the test is completely useless in filtering out interesting or good female characters in a realistic way.

I can see how the original comic was interesting, and it's thought-provoking to think about the media you consume that way, but that's about it.

We had a thread about it just the other day.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Both are obnoxious but I agree Maria is a lot worse than GoGo.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeah I mean I like Maria and all but the "did I mention I also learned kung-fu?" thing reeeally made me cringe.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I like the movie, but yeah, that was a bad line. I mean, if we get a movie about Maria that explains it, that'd be hilarious/awesome, I think, but it's still a stupid joke.

If BoL does well enough, that's the plan.....so at this rate, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is the bed you made, tumblr. Now lie in it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-02 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr has always been a shitty platform. LJ still rules. Mothafuck Tumblr for all eternity.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
They both sound silly, I have no interest in watching them.

I think BoL did some thing better re: women, like giving Maria a character, but some of the stuff (Because Joaquim wouldn't have stayed to protect his hometown if Maria didn't marry him? What is that?) was really strange.

There's room for both movies.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
According to my friend, Joaquin couldn't stay home because he was in active service, and had no dependents in San Angel, and that might have been something that would have been known to Mexican audiences? But I can't find sources to verify that, so take it as you will.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was explained briefly in the movie, though possibly it was easy to miss.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
tbh I'd say BH6 wins big there too, because as far as plot, one of them has two guys competing for a girl as a big plot point, while the other has female characters that are a part of the team. It's really nice to see female characters that are there as equals and not objects of affection for once.

But eh it's not really a competition

"Equals" isn't mutually exclusive from "object of affection" but it has to be handled with care.

Of course, if it's emphasis on the "objects" part (as in, their only purpose is to serve as an object for the male characters) then...yeah

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I should have made that more obvious. sorry.

ah, no worries :)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ideally, it'd be mutually inclusive, wouldn't it?

Yeah BH6 is much better about women (I didn't even realize it didn't pass the Bechdel test).

Also I liked 'woman up'. It would have been different if they'd... played it up in the film? Like had some big music crescendo that really drew attention to its AWESOME WITTINESS. But they didn't. GoGo just said it, and it felt natural and like something she would actually do. Imo.

I love both movies though.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I semi-agree. I didn't actually like "woman up," but it felt organic enough that it was like, "That's clunky, but it fits the character."
