Or maybe it's because the showrunners made it perfectly clear that their Constantine is totally 100% heterosexual and thus the slash fandom decided not to give them their raitings?

Not sure if actually everybody who watches got that memo, but yeah, that's the reason I decided not to tune in, even though I hunger for a good new fantasy show. :/

Not sure if everyone who writes it got the memo either...

I don't think they did. I mean, there's a few people here who claim he's so straight it hurts, but that's not what it came across to me at all. It's subtle, but if a guy tells me "I respect all the people I sleep with" that doesn't exactly scream hetero to me. I mean, it could be, but it's certainly not a man making a point of it. Frankly I'm surprised people aren't writing essays about it already.

Yeah, I mean it's grasping at subtext like most things but if they were aggressively trying to make him seem straight they could have tried a lot harder. I assume it's a network thing and not the team behind the show - NBC are after all the people who made Hannibal censor a painting of a topless woman while being fine with, well, Hannibal.

I don't think enough people are watching/interested to write essays, sadly.

It's weird, the violence-sex discrepancy. More so because I'm European, and especially as I was growing up it wasn't even uncommon to see boobies in a shower gel commercial.

And i wish people were writing essays because damn I haven't been this excited about a show for a while and I don't want it cancelled :(. Yes, I am a bitter fan.

I want to like it more than I do. I think it has a lot of good elements but the scripts don't seem to come together. But I definitely want it to have a chance.

That's definitely part of the reason I decided not to watch. (I also don't usually like fantasy shows, but I might've made an exception here.) When they decided to "straighten" a canonically bi character, particularly when said character would be on the network that gave us a canonically bi Tim Bayliss nearly 20 years ago, they lost my interest.

Well, to be fair, Homicide was kind of an anomaly for network television, and in any case NBC tried its very best to destroy everything good about it.

...15 years later I'm still mad about season 7.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
DA- and Bayliss wasn't outright stated to be bi until the show had been on the air for quite a few years. I think the writers were starting to foreshadow it as early as S2, but they didn't take the plunge until something like season 4, right? Maybe even 5?

Luckily, I was already thinking about a Christmas break marathon, so I'll remember to mark exactly when it is.

It wasn't until season 6, actually. The episode was called "Closet cases" or something. It was done in a sort of interesting way too, this guy asked him out at the end of the episode and he's basically like "Yeah, why not", much to Pembleton's confusion. Last time the issue of him potentially not being straight came up in season 4, he was really uncomfortable and weird about it, so it was quite a change. Seeing as it was season 6 though I'm not sure whether you can call that character development or inconsistent writing.

I remember Bayliss. Yummy...

Yeah, I was going to say, this. They did their best to alienate the audience that would be interested in that interpretation of the character.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
In later interviwes, the showrunner has recanted from this position that Constantine is undeniable straight.

He said something of the effect about "the relationships, the women and men" as in the context of Constantine liasions. Don't know the exact link but I now I read it on The Mary Sue.

So yeah, his bisexuality is a possibility, even if it's word of god and won't ever make it into the show (which was the true intention of the original statement, still kinda BS but W/E)

Also, in episode 4, you could definitely do a queer reading of Constantine and one of his previous associates.

Yup. When the showrunner announced that John Constantine was going to be 100% heterosexual, THIS bisexual decided to be 100% not watching.
