Maybe his age?

I wonder how much of it is that he's not presented as a hot young straight white guy with another hot young straight white guy to play off of.

If they're playing him as older, it may not draw the kind of high-energy adolescent fans who do lots of fic early in a show's run.

And I've heard before the hypothesis that slashing is about having pretty straight white guys--the target obsession of young white women--snog each other. If Constantine is canonically bi, does that change? I don't know, though I started to say it was just to be snarky.

If Constantine isn't playing that hard to young women (and so far I'd say it's not trying very hard to play to young women) then it may not get that response because it doesn't seduce the audience who responds that way.

Did the Hellblazer comics spawn any slashfic? I have no idea.

I don't know if it's age, the actor Matt Ryan and the character he is playing at the time of the show, are both in their early thirties. Younger than slash favorites, Dean Winchester and Will Graham.

Personally, I think it's Constantine's rough, English bulldog, two fingers in the air exterior. It's not like Dean who let's slip that he has "Chick Flick" moments all the time, though he will never admit it and tries to put on a tough Midwest American shell. Or Will Graham who is a weak little emotionally damaged kitten. Yes, John's life has been literal hell but he has a mean streak that can turn off the slashers.

I like your analysis. Yeah, I think it's the attitude. He's just not playing to the girls so much as bulldozing ahead with the case, or the mission, or whatever.

"You want to see two guys kissing? Whatever! See this maw of Hell opening up? That's what I'm here for!"

Right? He's too much of a bastard. You can't take one of those and make them into a delicate wilted flower that's perfect for slashing.

He'd go, "Wot now? You want me to wot? Wit who? Oh, piss off wit you. I'm fightin' a demon over here. You want slash, give me a knife!"

Personally, I find his attitude kind of refreshing.

Not entirely sure the Dean example counts given Dean was canonically in his early 20s when Supernatural started.

My mum's a huge fan of Constantine :P (the comic version, she hates comics...). Hell, most of his fans that I know of are women. Wouldn't say it's his age in comics (on on show material he seems so young) it would draw younger women (12th Doctor anyone?).

Hellblazer used to have mostly slash fics when I came looking in 2004. Was disappointed back then ;) .
