No doubt there are a lot of stupid questions people ask (hell I'm only a fanfic writer and I used to get some pretty stupid questions myself from time to time), but there's still a way to answer without being a dick about it.

However dumb/easily Googled the question, these are still his fans who've invested in his work -- financially and emotionally -- and should be shown a little more respect than that.

I dunno. I think anyone who decides to ask for some of a famous author's time and when given some, uses that time to basically ask him to retype the blurb from the back of one of his books deserves a small measure of sarcasm.

Simply buying a book doesn't entitle anyone to respect.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It kind of does though.

He wouldn't be selling his books at all if people weren't the ones buying them.

Oh, I'd better rush off to send a tumblr ask then, because two years ago I bought a copy of American Gods and now I'd like Gaiman to make me some soup and help me with my math homework! He owes me, I spent eight whole dollars.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Grow up.

Assuming you're the same anon from below, if I buy a copy of one of Gaiman's books, I'm a paying customer. I can bother him about "whatever the fuck I like", right? What I'd like is for Neil Gaiman to make me some nice chicken noodle soup and help me with my homework. It might sound like a ridiculous request to you, but I bought the book and I'm entitled to Gaiman's respect, according to you.

Simply writing a book doesn't entitle anyone to treat others with disrespect either.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's right. Anyone who refuses to answer the questions I was too lazy to look up myself is disrespecting me. This is going to make future research for papers sooooooo much easier.

lmgtfy is the epitome of passive agressiveness

"For all those people who find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than google it for themselves."

Honestly? Your paying fucking customers can bother you with whatever the fuck they like. And you're perfectly entitled to treat that any way you choose, but there are consequences for that too.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're invested in his work financially and emotionally, what's preventing you from spending another two seconds to google something? I mean, if you care that much about the answer, why not help yourself rather than poke the author you supposedly admire, which basically says, "Hey, I know you're busy but I need you to google something for me". That's just plain rude.
