I like his writing (though I don't think it's exceptional) but I definitely like his personality/public persona.

if you ever have the opportunity, see him live. I've seen him live on multiple occasions he's been brilliant every time. Once was part of the book tour with Ocean at the End of the Lane, once for An Evening with Neil and Amanda, and once at the local college for a words and music festival they were hosting.

I'd love to, though I don't think we're often geographically near. I saw some advice he gave about writing at a college - and it stuck out, I really liked it.

He is really great to see live. I saw him for the tour he did for the 10th anniversary of American Gods, and it was just lovely.

/braces self for all the outrage directed at people who commit the dastardly crime of telling people to Google information for themselves instead of making someone else do the work for them

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I get a lot of secondhand embarrassment from fellow Gaiman fans who say things like this. "Please pay attention to meeeeeeeeeeee!"

I feel less bad for people who claim "I looked and couldn't find anything" when it's revealed they didn't even do a basic Google search. I don't know if they're just lying liars who lie or they're just too ignorant to know how to Google, but either way... *shrug*

I still can't get over the fact that he wrote Sméagol/Gollum slash.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
There'll always be a small part of me who respects him for that.

Jeez he sounds exactly the way he writes and not in a good way.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhh, which of his books sounds like "It's about 200 pages"?

His tumblr responses are sometimes HILARIOUS. I'm a fan of his work, so it's nice to know I'm not biased in this regard.

Off topic, but I really like your icon.

Paul Bettany ♥. (I love Wimbledon for his performance in it.)

He sounds pretty obnoxious, tbh. I once asked an author (not him) perhaps a dumb question via email and got a rather curt response. I was ten years old, shockrd that an author I lived wasn't perfectly polite at all times, and I never read another book by her again. I think people who ask qurstions like that are just young and want to engage their favourite author somehow. There's no need to be snarky about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
That's true if you think of it as one question from one kid. But that's not actually how things work in the real world, (if you're Neil Gaiman, anyway!) it's more like hundreds of questions every day, most of which you've already answered dozens of times and most of which can be easily found if people just Googled for it. Instead, they want you to do the work for them. Nothing says "my time is more valuable than yours" than asking a person an easy question you could've found the answers to on your own in less than five minutes.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice if/when an author is extremely patient with fans and their questions. But I don't blame them if they occasionally get short with people, because you can't expect them to have limitless reserves of patience. Gaiman wasn't particularly nasty about it, either.

You were shocked that a writer was a real person and not a fantasy ideal, and you never got over the fact that people who write are real people and not fantasy ideals?

No doubt there are a lot of stupid questions people ask (hell I'm only a fanfic writer and I used to get some pretty stupid questions myself from time to time), but there's still a way to answer without being a dick about it.

However dumb/easily Googled the question, these are still his fans who've invested in his work -- financially and emotionally -- and should be shown a little more respect than that.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I think anyone who decides to ask for some of a famous author's time and when given some, uses that time to basically ask him to retype the blurb from the back of one of his books deserves a small measure of sarcasm.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Simply buying a book doesn't entitle anyone to respect.

If you're invested in his work financially and emotionally, what's preventing you from spending another two seconds to google something? I mean, if you care that much about the answer, why not help yourself rather than poke the author you supposedly admire, which basically says, "Hey, I know you're busy but I need you to google something for me". That's just plain rude.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I can't remember who it was who responded to "what are your songs about?" with "Most of them are about 2 minutes." Bob Dylan?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-02 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, it took me until this comment to realise there was a pun in the second answer.
I thought it was more of a "I'm not telling you, just read the damn book, it's only about 200 pages" sort of thing. It's certainly funnier now that I get it.
