I'm not sure how they'd sink it, though, save for giving one or both a female love interest, and I'm not sure that would be something they'd even want to spend screen time on.

Yeah, I was wondering that too. I guess one of them could die -- though that doesn't really keep people from writing slash.

Herman already has a wife, she was mentioned in the novelization. I dunno how much they'd stick to the book but one of the script writers was pretty insistent on her actually existing, so...

Ah, I didn't realize.

The novelization was written based on an earlier version of the script, though... one in which Hermann is very different from the Hermann in the final version (blond, not at all physically disabled, more overtly jerkish in placing being right over human lives...)

The actor was never told about his character having a wife/kid, which as an actor, is a huge deal and could affect how a part is played. It affects your motivations really strongly.

Most film novelizations are not fully canonical, because they're usually based on early versions of scripts, and there are bound to be parts that don't wind up in the film.

Beacham is one out of three writers on this next one, so we'll see what Hermann's family situation turns out to be, but... I've gotta admit, a part of me is with the OP on this one. Until she shows up on the screen/in person, Vanessa is a concept that didn't make it into the film, not a character. (I mean, to Beacham, she may well be, but so far to the fans, she's not. She is a collection of OCs that share some basic traits, but unless we really see more of her, I have a really hard time calling her 'canon')

I'm not even that invested in the ship (it's cool, though, and a very long and very excellent fic convinced me of its potential) but I kind of don't want there to be a sequel because I don't want to see either of them killed off.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want a sequel, because I enjoyed the story and I liked the ending.

"Yay, we sealed the breach and saved the earth!" (Cue sequel.) "Oops, no we didn't."

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I can't remember, which one has a wife?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hermann, I think.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Weird, I'd have bet it was the other one lol. She even has a name, Rebecca rite?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It was Vanessa, and I think that she was a model of some sort? I don't think it was ever clarified what type, though.

In the novel it mentions he's married dude. Ship is already sunk.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for keeping pointing that out.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Somebody has to.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm concerned, if it ain't in the movie it ain't canon.

Getting real sick of this stupid-ass trend JKR started. If you want something to be accepted as canon, then fucking put it in canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Literally the only relationships mentioned in that movie are ones that directly affected the day-to-day operations. A side character having a wife isn't relevant to the plot, which is why it's not mentioned in the movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's fine, there's nothing wrong with fanon. Most of my own ships are crack, but I believe it was Travis Beacham who said that he was married. He has a tumblr account if you are interested in finding out more. He posts a lot of really insightful posts about writing and about Pacific Rim in general. But I mean, he doesn't lord it over people the way JKR does, he just has a lot of interesting ideas and is even open to answering some other questions about other concepts from that universe.

Maybe you can ship their characters in It's Always Sunny... instead?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to ship those two, but somehow I ended up shipping Newt and Hannibal Chau...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaaaa preach it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
My only opinion on Hannibal was: why is he white?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the characters, read the first ten words of your secret, and shouted, "Me, too!" Only then I read the rest and realized that we're dreading completely different things: I'm worried that there'll be way too much Newt and Hermann in the sequel for my tastes.

(The characters were fine and a nice bit of comic relief in the first film, but when it was over, I didn't want more of them. I do want a lot more Mako Mori, Herc Hansen, and Tendo Choi. Wouldn't say no to some Stacker Pentecost and/or Kaidanovsky and/or Wei Tang flashbacks, either. If instead the sequel ends up being mostly about the scientists, I'm gonna be disappoint.)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw Pacific Rim (though awhile ago) and I love slash. But I have no idea who these characters are.
