The reason is because a lot of people can't handle any expression of emotion besides anger from a male. Men and boys feel emotions so it's realistic, but society says men and boys aren't supposed to feel those things. So people who've bought into that see it as a policing opportunity, even if they don't realize that's what they're doing.

I've said it before, but that show made so much more sense to me once I realize it was a straight-up women's prison exploitation anime crossed with a mecha series
