The reason is because a lot of people can't handle any expression of emotion besides anger from a male. Men and boys feel emotions so it's realistic, but society says men and boys aren't supposed to feel those things. So people who've bought into that see it as a policing opportunity, even if they don't realize that's what they're doing.

There's some truth to that

I think there's also some truth to the idea that most people don't enjoy fiction that is significantly devoted to fictional characters complaining about things, however valid those complaints might be

I think that's a good point, but the problem I see is that the kind of complaining that's seen as okay from female characters is seen as weak in male characters. Also, complaining at all in male characters makes people dislike those characters, even if their complaints take up only a small portion of the story. I don't think it's "significantly devoted" if the complaints only really happen in the first act.

Wait what? Everything I talked about in that comment comes from the same place that says women are of lesser value. Traditional roles say women are emotional and men are logical, so that's part of why men are seen as leaders and given more value than women. But women can also be logical and men can also be emotional (and of course women can be good leaders and have the same value). Deconstructing the system that's in place is about making it okay for both women and men to step outside of the boxes that are built around them.

I agree with this.

I will never get how Hope is so hated (or how hated he was when the game came out, if I remember correctly more people liked him in XIII-2 when he got older and hotter. That's fandom for you!)

I agree with you, OP! I know I wouldn't have handled this as well as he did when I was his age.

As for the BS, I love all the characters too! I don't really get all the Vanille hate either, especially when it's about silly things like her "oh-so-fake" Australian accent, when her VA is actually Australian!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there are fangirls who were shallow enough to only like Hope because he grew up sexy, but I would rather believe people liked him in FFXIII-2 because he stopped being angry, was in charge of one of the game's cooler settings/times, and freely helped the protagonists instead of trying to murder one of them.

Hope IS weak at the beginning. He doesn't have the courage to admit to Snow that he hates him, or why. It also surely pisses people off that Hope blames Snow for his mother's death at all- it certainly pissed me off. I had less sympathy for his personal problem than for everyone else's.

I don't hate Hope, though. He had character development, he got over it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
For me, at least, it's all about first impressions. The first time he really had an impact on my game was right at the beginning when he goes off alone with Lightning and is completely useless. I was missing Vanille just because she had a couple of levels up on him and would have been so much more useful...

He kept being one of the weakest characters up to the end and a worst healer than Vanille despite the fact that I tried to upgrade him more and make him my main healer.

So, yeah. That's why he annoys the hell out of me. Also, yelling at the TV whenever he fucks up is great, and perfectly harmless, catharsis. So there's that, too.

Oh and he's way more awesome in Lightning Returns. I like him a lot more in that game.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I used both him and Vanille. (My leader was Fang. They didn't get a lot of stars, but they were frigging impossible to kill whenever I went defensive.)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I agree so much. Hope is my favorite! Fang's pretty cool too, but really, I found Hope the most easy to latch onto.

I wish fandom cared about him outside "HopeRai" and "NoHope", though. I don't have a ship for him or much opinion on the latter, but slapping him with Lightning just reeks of pair the spares to me. (Because Lightning NEEEEDS a love interest, right? Ugh.)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't love Hope, but he was less annoying to me than Snow or Vanille.

In general, though, I think the character development in XIII-1 was very slow. It seemed to take a long time for each of the characters to get out of their initial intro characterisation box. So I'm not surprised that people react badly to Hope - he spent a LOT of time in the 'upset kid too afraid to do anything but complain off to the side' mode.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Hope.

Sure, he was a bit whiny but, like you said, he saw his mother die and had to come to terms, very quickly, with not only being basically branded a leper in the society he grew up in, but being hunted by the authorities for it AND being essentially cursed to a horrible fate, win or lose.

This all happens in a matter of hours for him, how do people expect a young teenager to react to that shit?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just hated him because he was weak gameplay wise. The parts where you had to play as him drove me insane because I would have a harder time with him.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought he made a really good mage.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
My theory is that a lot of people never got to (or past) Palumpolum, and so their impression of Hope as an angsty little boy who couldn't express his anger never got challenged.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
idk generally speaking, I feel some people never get past that age of decrying how dumb barney is (or some other young kids show) and so they refuse to enjoy anything that appears childish or overly girly and resort to bashing to keep their sense of pride intact. I'm not saying all people who dislike characters do this, but y'know, if you're ewww-ing loud enough about a character, it really takes me back.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I hate shit like that. It's like, No shit they're angry or upset or useless - so would anyone be.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I hated him because the story catered to him so much. It gave him way too much attention at the cost of the story and it turned into shit. I rolled my eyes when he magically gets the idea to go to Oerba as if the five other older people, including TWO of them who were native to Pulse, were too dumb to think of it. He ~melts the ice queen Lightning~ with his boyish innocence and ~pure heart~.

He's made to look better at the expense of the other characters and that's why I hate him. Fact is, if he hadn't been there, everything would have played out the same. He had zero impact on the story other than to take time and development away from the other characters and to bring down everyone. I think they realized it because the next two games (which were worse than the first) made sure to make him the special snowflake they planned him to be.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get that sense so much. I agree he did do a bit of heart melting for Lightning, but I rather found that interesting. Considering the genders and ages of the characters, it felt a bit unconventional. To have a fourteen year old little brother figure bring out a less douchey side of a tough warrior (who is female)... I thought it was an interesting dynamic. If the genders had been reversed I think it would've felt cheap just because that would've been so overdone, but as it was, I didn't mind it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I always liked Hope, and he, Fang and Lightning made up my team. I guess I mostly found him adorable and felt defensive of him, some weird big sister feeling I guess. I didn't really find him whiny at all, especially considering he was a fourteen year old?

I do look forward to the day when Japan realizes that teenage boys aren't half the size of adults though. A fourteen year old Hope could very well be as tall as Lightning. Oh well, one day.
