The reason is because a lot of people can't handle any expression of emotion besides anger from a male. Men and boys feel emotions so it's realistic, but society says men and boys aren't supposed to feel those things. So people who've bought into that see it as a policing opportunity, even if they don't realize that's what they're doing.

There's some truth to that

I think there's also some truth to the idea that most people don't enjoy fiction that is significantly devoted to fictional characters complaining about things, however valid those complaints might be

I think that's a good point, but the problem I see is that the kind of complaining that's seen as okay from female characters is seen as weak in male characters. Also, complaining at all in male characters makes people dislike those characters, even if their complaints take up only a small portion of the story. I don't think it's "significantly devoted" if the complaints only really happen in the first act.

Example: Shinji Ikari.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Shinji. I still think the reason that some people hate him is because they don't want to admit that they'd be as whiny as him if they were placed in the same shitty situation; the dude's life fucking sucked. I just felt sorry for him and thought most of his reactions were pretty understandable (the masturbating over his friend's unconscious body thing though? okay, that's still pretty weird)

MRA Detected.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
lol really?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Really.

"Men and boys feel"
"society says men and boys"
"a policing opportunity"

Word for word MRA Rhetoric.

These are also things talked about in feminist theory. Patriarchy is about the whole not just about women. Patriarchy says how men and boys should act and feel and polices them when they step outside of it, and that's part of how the system is kept in place. When men are taught that some things are "feminine" and that femininity is "weakness," it's easier for them to fall into the thinking that women are lesser.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
lol no
that would be feminism

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:34 am (UTC)(link)

Wait what? Everything I talked about in that comment comes from the same place that says women are of lesser value. Traditional roles say women are emotional and men are logical, so that's part of why men are seen as leaders and given more value than women. But women can also be logical and men can also be emotional (and of course women can be good leaders and have the same value). Deconstructing the system that's in place is about making it okay for both women and men to step outside of the boxes that are built around them.

NA To be fair, you are presenting the arguments from a male focused viewpoint.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but what the fuck does that have to do with being an MRA

The things I'm talking about are harmful to everyone. They're also things that are talked about in feminist theory, and from what I have seen MRAs would be opposed to what I'm saying and defend the idea of women being emotional and men being logical.

I don't think it's wrong to criticise gender from a "male-focused viewpoint" if the point is greater gender equality and free expression for everyone.

+1

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, MRAs only have use for emotional men when it's a convenient point to argue. Any other time? They're just "blubbering omega male manginas" or some bullshit like that. Same goes for male rape victims, men in non-traditional careers, etc.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
well...yeah, some arguments are just going to have a male focused viewpoint. there's nothing inherently wrong with that

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
...we're talking about a male character. What viewpoint should we be using?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
