Yes, but there's stupid and there's stupid. A laser sword you can use to cut someone's head off, however impractical, is still cool-looking. One that looks like the only thing it's gonna cut is whoever's stupid enough to try and use it, on the other hand, not quite so much.

It went over the edge, is the point. Lightsabers have always been impractical, but they've also been wish-fulfilment and cool-looking. This one ... isn't. So it breaks the happy suspension of disbelief.
