[Parks and Recreation]

Eh. I know where you're coming from, but I think the amazing home life they gave him does make up for it, to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It does often seem to me like he wins in the end and the other characters don't even realize it.

This. It's still one of my least favorite gags in Parks and Rec but I'm more okay with his designated butt monkey status since he's probably the most well adjusted person on the show and has a great home life where he's completely beloved by his whole family. He also apparently has a gigantic dong, so there's that too. I also like the friendship moments he had with Ben in the last season and I hope it comes up more often

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
The way the other characters treat him is the only about Parks & Rec that I don't like.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I don't think it even really fits the show. I was fine with Jerry being Jerry'd in the beginning, and honestly if he had actual flaws (Michael Scott tendencies or something) that made him as incompetent as they imply I'd be fine - but he hasn't done anything than have small mistakes that should pass two seconds later amplified, and it's getting meaner and meaner, for all the "give Jerry a break" episodes they have to presumably make up for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
same here

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I actually was the Jerry at work for a while, albeit really at the hands of one particular person (although sometimes she dragged other people into it), and my home life was happy but it didn't matter, almost every single day I was a complete moron. When that person left I actually wanted to go to work again. I know it's just a show, but knowing how office bullying can drain you also makes me uncomfortable.

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2014-12-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
SAME. I know they compensate by giving Jerry a Super Awesome Life outside of work (and later having Ben befriend Jerry, even if the others question him for it), but it really bugs me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it too especially since bullying in the workplace is sadly common and really not funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It really is an awful gag on an otherwise fantastic show. That he has the perfect home life is funny, but that would still be funny if they didn't cross the line with the bullying. The Muncie jokes are funny, the how-did-Jerry-land-Gail jokes are sometimes funny, when they don't cross a line. I wish the show would realize this, but I guess it's too late now.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know what you mean! I love Jerry! :-(

I like the gags when they go completely over the top, like the time he invented self-sustaining, clean electricity and no one paid attention and then he sneezed and broke it. But a lot of the other less "out there" ones can end up feeling extremely uncomfortable.

It's easier to watch when you separate his character from the actor, remember that he's going home with a huge paycheck at the end of the day, and that all his coworkers love him. Of course, the fact that I have to do that pretty much says it all.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are overly sensitive about this and other things.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's called having empathy.

I actually think it's great that people are uncomfortable with a bullying situation, as someone who was bullied and a bunch of my classmates thought it was hilarious.

I think you're right. I was bullied as a kid and I think the Jerry gags are hilarious. It's that Ouch-I-feel-for-you/oh-poor-you kind of comedy that only works in fiction.

This, so much. I've seen a lot of clips from the show, and everyone's bullying of him makes me so uncomfortable that I haven't started watching the show, despite nearly everyone I know highly recommending it.

for what it's worth, this is LITERALLY the only bad thing I have to say about P&R. It doesn't fit at all with the spirit of the show and how ultimately optimistic and uplifting (weirdly?? to me anyway) it tends to be, it's like... not funny and not cool and really jarring in a series that is otherwise full of great character moments and actual! character! development! arcs! but no, ~jerry sucks~ is the status quo, and I can't figure out why. :|

I always thought the joke was that everyone, even Leslie, make fun of him even in cases where he's shown to be intelligent and creative and talented.
Like, you're SUPPOSED to understand that everyone is really unreasonable about him even though he's super nice and pretty smart, to the point that they don't even call him by his actual name.
I think the audience isn't supposed to see him as a joke and a loser, just as a weird phenomenon that the characters react strangely to.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's all wrong though because bullies.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
But he's not. He's portrayed as good-hearted but bumbling. I don't think it's a BIG deal but sometimes I do feel sorry for him.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it does me too.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I had a similar problem with Jim/Dwight on The Office, though at least that was just one person.

I swear I stared at this for a full minute trying to figure out in what universe Archie Bunker was bullied. Then I saw the text at the bottom.

Same. It really only serves to make all the other characters look like assholes. Him being bad at his job is not an excuse, and him having a good home life does not make up for it.
