Or, you know, she might have fond memories of it. A lot of actors do, especially longer-running things with a cast that likes each other.

I don't think that's bad. You do what you must.

Kimberly!!!!!

Okay, carry on.

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-12-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
She's doing the convention circuit now? Awesome! I figured my chances of getting a picture with all four surviving original Rangers was nonexistent!

SURVIVING? What happened, and is it going to make me feel old? My childhood action heroes are not old enough to be dropping off.

the girl who played the Yellow Ranger died in a car accident back in 2001.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
What!!! I did not know that. She was my favorite one....

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-12-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to be the one to break the news, but Thuy Trang, who played Trini the yellow ranger, died in a car accident in early September of 2001.

You might have heard more about it had the World Trade Center attacks happened about a week later.

September 11 sure did fuck up my memories of anything else around that time now that you mention it. gdi

First of all, I meant "not happened," and I'm afraid this comment might have sounded a lot more callous than I had realized at the time.

No. The actor who played Billy dared her to dress up as the pink ranger if she met a donation goal. She did, so she dressed up.

I don't think it's so much that as she's starting to realise, thanks to social media (both in interacting with fans and fellow PR alumni), that there is still a big fan following out there. That's something we didn't have in the show's heyday. There's also this rumor that's been going around for years that she somehow "hates" PR. It's never been true, and I think that rumor is unfair to her and to the fans.

Does she do conventions like the other cast members? No, but she has good reasons for that too, so this is her way of acknowledging/showing her appreciation for that part of her career and to her fans.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
While it isn't true that she /hates/ PR, she was at one point /extremely/ embarrassed by it, as she stated in VH1's I Love the 90's.

If anybody hates it, you'd think it'd be David Yost. And he still is involved, so...

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
God when I learned about what happened to David Yost I was horrified

I give him so much props for still sticking with the series now because if it was me I would denounce everything about Power Rnagers

Just because you don't understand things doesn't make them not so.

Thuy, Austin, and Walter also have perfectly valid reasons to not want anything to do with the franchise anymore, considering how unceremoniously they were dumped as well

I'm a little surprised anyone connected with the first installment of the series wants to be associated with it, really.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-03 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
She really didn't hate the series but was really embarrassed by it (also there's an implication that she has a bad experience with some of the overzealous fans back in the 90s)

But I feel that originally she started paying attention to the fanbase because it was a good investment for her, however she now genuinely wants to get involved because the positive experience she had with the LexiCon she went to. That's why I said I didn't care if she had some selfish intentions in the beginning since it shown her that her paranoia of the franchise can be put to rest (for now anyway).

I think some of her initial hesistation to do much with it might also have come from the fact that she seems to be the only one of the original five who continued acting after leaving the show (or at least she's the only one who actually managed to do much). I'm not sure being on Power Rangers is really a great thing to have on your acting resume.

But now that she's been in a few other things, it's probably easier to get into it since she's known for more than being Kimberly at this point (though probably still best known for that).

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-12-03 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the life cycle of the genre actor. First you get really famous for portraying a semi-iconic character on a not very well regarded scifi/fantasy show. Then you try to go into other things but find that your connection to that shows is seen as a detriment to your success and audiences ability to take you seriously as another character. Then you realize just how beneficial such a fanbase can be both for money and good will and you learn to embrace it. It happened to Shatner, it happened to Adam West, and maybe now it's happening to Amy Jo Johnson.

Exactly. And both Shatner and Adam West seem to really enjoy the con experience, so hopefully it turns out as well for Amy. I would love to get her autograph if she came to a con, Kimberly was the most kickass valley girl ever!

I never watched the Power Rangers so every time I see her I think "there's Susie Q!"

Oh my god, I loved that movie as a kid. Thanks for reminding me of its existence, anon!
