Exercise Question

(Anonymous) 2014-12-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
ariakas's thread got me thinking...

I used to do a bunch of crunches when I was younger. But I had lower back surgery in high school and now I get a sharp pain in my back any time I try to do exercise involving my lower back and butt (crunches, sit-ups, that bicycle thing).

Does anyone have suggestions for exercises I could do to tone my abs? I'd love a variety of stuff.

:)

Yeah, definitely skip the crunches. They're not great in general, but especially not for people who have back issues.

Try planks maybe?

Most ab workouts hurt my neck, so I usually just stick to planks.

How do you Supermans feel for you? I hate em but I think they're used for lower back strengthening/rehab purposes, along with a little abs.

Youtube Jillian Michael's six-week abs. I'm trying to do it.

I would also recommend yoga and dancing. I started building a really good core doing yoga and the dancing helped.

A friend of mine cites Pilates as the thing to do if you want to build your core. He suffers from lower back pain and believes in Pilates like no one's business. I would check with my physician....just in case!

Are you stretching first before exercising? Good idea to do it at any age, but especially as you get older. If you've had surgery, I don't know, might be a good idea to ask your doctor at your next check up and stick to exercises that take it easy. Swimming, maybe yoga?

Yoga ball. You get core focus without putting as much stress on your back.

Believe it or not, pushups, especially if you take them slow. They hold you in the plank position which really works your abs. Pull ups and chinups work your upper abs pretty hard too.

If you have access to a gym, there's also the machine where you hold yourself above the ground and do leg raises for your lower abs.
