Why is it whenever a pairing or hell even a fandom gets popular, there is pretty much without fail a "I hate ____ because of the fans!" mentality? Why hang around the fans who are being assholes about something?

(Maybe it helps that I'm good at separating a thing from the people who like the thing, since you know, the former really doesn't choose the latter...)

To be fair, I don't. I hang out in the Makorra tag, which gets ten-fifteen crosstaggers per day telling me I'm a scumbag/heteronormative/homophobic because I like Makorra.
