Re: Preparing for exams

Absorb information in multiple formats - written, visual, auditory, etc. Colour-coding is your friend. If you're just reading it you won't retain it as effectively.

Someone upthread mentioned taking the exam in similar conditions to how you study for it - ie. chewing gum. Obviously you're not going to be able to replicate it exactly, but if you have the same sort of snacks on hand, it can help. (Bonus! Sugar can provide a bit of a "rush" during the exam and may help you focus.)

Avoid caffeine and avoid pulling all-nighters. Why caffeine? Well, it might give you an extra boots of energy... but that will come with a crash later on. And it actually makes your attention more scattered, not more focused. AND it doesn't help anxiety.

Maybe try meditation if you're super nervous? That can also help with focusing your attention and getting in "the zone".

Pomodoro technique. I now use this for assignments and writing essays, and I wish I'd heard of it sooner. Basically, you set a timer for 20 minutes, and just work on whatever it is you need to do, for that entire time. Then you take a break. (Can be 5 mins, I usually take 10 mins or even half an hour because I have a terrible attention span.)

Turn off the internet. Just turn it off, block all the sites (yes, even F!S) and unplug the modem if you need to. Don't even go there. The internet is my #1 way to waste time.
