Preparing for exams

Any tips?

Coffee. Drink lots of it.

I'd advise against this, honestly. A small amount of caffeine can help with alertness and concentration, but drink lots of it and you'll just be jittery and wired, especially if you don't ordinarily have a lot of coffee/caffine.

Tea. Not herbal "tea", because that doesn't have caffeine.

This is going to sound weird, but I swear it works (if your school is cool with you chewing gum during exams).

Assign each class a flavor of gum, and while you're studying, chew that flavor. Also chew that flavor during the exam.

I don't know if it actually helps, or if it was just a placebo, but it works for me.

Just make sure that each class is a specific flavor.

my teacher once advocated something similar--not chewing gum but basically said to take the test similarly to how you study, like if you're super caffienated while studying then be so for the test as well.

I've never tried that!

Though, the caffeine thing wouldn't work for me.... Curse you caffeine-caused sleepiness! >:I

* Resist the urge to cram or pull an all nighter until you drop. People generally don't retain information well under those circumstances.

* Don't just read/reread what you need to know, write it down. The action of having to write (or type would also work, I guess) is that it emphasizes the information in your brain, you're processing it twice and will be more likely to recall it later.

* Get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast before exams. Nothing too rich that will upset your stomach, but something filling. Oatmeal with fruit is a good option. Eggs and toast.

Come up with a schedule to study. Write down when your exams will be, then write when you will study for them and for how long. Plan at LEAST two study sessions before each exam, and include more if possible. Even if it's just for a few minutes between classes. Note cards will help make micro-study sessions more doable, since they're portable and you can focus on one aspect if it's giving you trouble.

Schedule time after each exam to reward yourself, even if it's just with a cup of tea or hot chocolate.

Good luck!

The thing I used to do was turn stuff over in my head out loud and talk to people about it. If I could get into a discussion about the really important things I could remember that discussion and even apply any insight I might've gotten from that discussion.

Sleep with your books under the pillow.

eat your textbook. you'll have have to pay book fees, of course, but you'll have thoroughly digested the knowledge and be able to recall everything for the test. make sure you do it at least 8 hours before your exams as it takes that long for it go through your digestive track. i recommend adding some vegetables like peppers and some spices before eating as the textbooks themselves tend to be pretty bland.

A trick someone told me once was pretend to teach the material - even if it's just to pets/stuffed animals. If you know it well enough to teach it to someone else then you're unlikely to forget it come exam time.

Don't cram. Study for thirty minutes. Take a break. Study for thirty minutes etc. Quiz yourself. Have someone else quiz you. Don't just read and reread.

Absorb information in multiple formats - written, visual, auditory, etc. Colour-coding is your friend. If you're just reading it you won't retain it as effectively.

Someone upthread mentioned taking the exam in similar conditions to how you study for it - ie. chewing gum. Obviously you're not going to be able to replicate it exactly, but if you have the same sort of snacks on hand, it can help. (Bonus! Sugar can provide a bit of a "rush" during the exam and may help you focus.)

Avoid caffeine and avoid pulling all-nighters. Why caffeine? Well, it might give you an extra boots of energy... but that will come with a crash later on. And it actually makes your attention more scattered, not more focused. AND it doesn't help anxiety.

Maybe try meditation if you're super nervous? That can also help with focusing your attention and getting in "the zone".

Pomodoro technique. I now use this for assignments and writing essays, and I wish I'd heard of it sooner. Basically, you set a timer for 20 minutes, and just work on whatever it is you need to do, for that entire time. Then you take a break. (Can be 5 mins, I usually take 10 mins or even half an hour because I have a terrible attention span.)

Turn off the internet. Just turn it off, block all the sites (yes, even F!S) and unplug the modem if you need to. Don't even go there. The internet is my #1 way to waste time.

Study in a quiet environment, because chances are your exams will also take place in a quiet environment. I would recommend studying without any other chemical alterations in your system as it would affect your memory come test day. If you consume beer while you study, it would be better for you to take the test with alcohol in your system, though I wouldn't recommend doing that in general.

The night before

Do nothing. Watch your favorite movie, make your favorite food (and enough for leftovers for post-exam!), hang out with friends if they'll crawl out of their hermit holes, sleep.

When I started doing this, my exams went so much better. If you haven't learned it by the night before, it's not going to matter the day of. The rest you can bullshit. :P
