Ohhh oh my God, I have story about this one. When I was a baby fanfic writer I wrote a silly fic for some movie(or the direct to video sequel) because I was obsessed with it at the time. It was ehh not that much done and the chapters were tiny because they were just "get my foot in the door" shit. All in all it was a tiny fic that wasn't even long enough to be bad.

Years passed, I moved on and forgot about it but kept it up for a small number of people who cared. Seven years later. I get a notice about a fanfic review for it. It's a flame.

A flame on a seven year old fanfic. I pretty much laughed my ass off. But since I disliked flamers I wrote a response to him being sure to tell him "heey if you expected me to feel sad about this, you're about 6 or 7 years too late"

He responds, telling me "oh the flame was nothing personal it was because you liked [unpopular sequel]"

lol

What the fuuuuuuuuuck.

At least you got a laugh out of it. :D

Yeah. Although I would have cried if I got it when I was 13. I'm glad he waited so long.

In this case it was better that it was 7 years old.

They sound like an idiot. Sorry you got an idiot flaming you, no matter when.

Yeah. Honestly I hate people who act like by flaming they're doing any great favor. Or "quality control"

All they're doing is worsening the situation by making young authors super defensive so that they flip out even when someone gives legit criticism. It's counterproductive.

Really it's just because they want to get away with and rationalize being assholes.

(side note: I no longer take seriously "welcome to the internet" as an excuse for shitty online behavior. Maybe it works as a warning but when you act rude and then claim 'but it's the internet" it's cheap and cowardly.)

Exactly, the only thing "welcome to the internet" does after a person has been rude, is also make that person look sad, as if they can't imagine the world any other way.

It's a good advert to know to stay away from them until they mature a little (hopefully).

Honestly real life and the internet has taught me one thing. There are people that are assholes, and they're also really self absorbed, and expect the world to change and "deal with it" so they can just keep on being the same asshole.

Exactly like real life!

And they get really angry when you ask them to adhere to basic general standards of politeness.

Defensive people never learn or get any better, and I don't think they're very happy either. They always feel under attack by others. Assholes provide a really good lesson of what not to do in order to live a fulfilling life, so at least they provide that handy service.
