When I'm talking to pets, it's usually stuff like "Look, I got you a treat. Yes, that's tasty, isn't it?" or "Who's a good boy?" You know usual pet stuff.

When a character does it, it's usually about some emotional crisis with the pet's owner like "But I never meant to hurt her and now she hates me." *beat* "Great now I'm talking to a cat."

Well, in that case, I think it's deeply unrealistic, and probably kinda bad writing, but not weird as such
