Yes this. Great examples. When a main character is a helpless observer/audience stand-in to a tragedy that is already part of the plot, rather than an event only being tragic because of his reaction to it (i.e., it has nothing to do with the dead character herself or her circumstances), it's just plain better writing, even apart from the gender stuff.
