Whenever I see the word manpain I automatically associate it with Levi from Attack on Titan. In that manga everyones lives sucks and everyone has lost someone, but the fandom glorifies Levi as some kind of tragic hero who has it the worst. Even his own spinoff gave him two friends for no purpose other than to kill them off. Not to mention when his squad died people cared more about Levi's angst than the characters in his squad who died.

It's not just a love interest getting killed off, but his friends and two squads who were never developed as anything more than people Levi has a responsibility for. Literally the exact same shit happened to him 3 times. I know for a fact if he wasn't such a massively popular character with the fangirls who want to treat him like a precious baby that needs comforting he would never have gotten a spinoff in the first place.

but... he doesn't actually angst about it any more than anybody else?

I agree with you that his life sucks massive overkill (multiple squads dying, the friends who exist only to die, being raised by a serial killer). I think there's a separation between fandom woobifying a character and the series having manpain. Any character that people like, they blow up everything about them.

But excuse me, how about Marco, that the fandom has Jean mourning over and crying night and day, even though he barely had any screentime?
Or what about Eren, whose mom was ~horribly killed in front of his eyes~ and then he sees the same titan that killed her, and then finds out he ate his dad... that's not over-the-top?

The reason Levi got a spinoff wasn't because of 'manpain' it was because of him being popular, and THAT is because he's short, tsundere, and very badass.

I don't even know why you're barking up this tree, I mean I get that you hate Levi but hate him for the actual stuff.
