(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)I was in a fandom where there was canon m/m and f/f. A few people were disgusting by this, and pretended this character wasn't gay and bashed the people who shipped a canonly lesbian character. People who shipped canonly queer characters got homophobically bashed all the time. I lost count of the number of times I counted fans going after people shipping these canon ships. Why? Because we're all just perverted fat fangirls who want to gay up a pure straight pair for funsies.
They pulled up some of the most godawful 50s stereotypes (she just has daddy issues! Maybe she was raped? Who knows, but she's found cock and it's all better!)
I don't really care if it's your OTP. This is my life. I'd hope you would know better than to racebend a POC character to white for funsies, and I'd hope you'd know better than to fall into a pit of homophobia and bash people for shipping canon queer characters, because this one girl fits so much better with the heterosexuality you want them to have.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)if you want to ship a canon gay character in a straight pairing you should at LEAST be smart enough to understand why that pisses people off and why their anger is legitimate. you're free to ship whatever you want, but don't complain about backlash because frankly, who gives a shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 05:18 am (UTC)(link)But with all respect, what about people who are into a het ship involving a gay character, who aren't total fucking evil asshats about it?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 06:17 am (UTC)(link)ngl I'd still be side-eyeing why they felt the need to do that. They might not be evil asshats but I'd have to suspect there was some kind of internalized prejudice and some kind of desire to make everything heteronormative going on.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)I'm bi, and I ship basically every possible permutation of canon-->headcanon sexual orientations: m/m and f/f involving canonically queer characters, m/m and f/f involving canonically straight or undeclared-generally-assumed-straight characters, m/f involving characters canonically attracted to the opposite sex, and m/f involving canonically gay characters. No desire for heteronormativity here; some m/f ships with canonically gay characters just ping me the right way.
