Let me put it like this. In Last of Us, Joel's daughter gets nearly no characterization besides being a prologue character. And the entire rest of the game is about Joel's pain over the death of his daughter, to the point that he's willing to fuck over the rest of humanity and take away an immune girl's choice because he can't stand to lose his replacement daughter. And this is somehow presented as moral, his daughter only exists to set the backdrop for his pain and she isn't even developed far enough to really give us a reason to care other than the sheer brutality of it being a thing.

So it's less about shaming emotions, and more about how the man's pain is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVAR and HOW COOL AND GRITTY AND AWESOME AND FREE OF CONSEQUENCES it makes him.
