When I think of the trope "man pain" I always think of Patch Adams. I have no idea if the movie actually fits the trope or not, but it sticks out so much because when I watched it as a kid I thought it was a cheap way for the protagonist to have emotional turmoil about his job. Like, even as a youngster I could recognize how overdone it is

Well, that film is semi-biographical and a friend of the actual person was murdered, except the friend was male. So, yeah, the change to female and the romance between them was completely unnecessary and probably only there for added angst, but the actual incident did happen.
